Trong 7 ngày từ 17/8 đến 23/8, số ca nhiễm mới toàn cầu giảm 5%, số ca tử vong giảm 12% so với một tuần trước đó. Châu Mỹ, nơi bị ảnh hưởng nặng nề, có sự chững lại rõ rệt nhất, theo báo cáo của WHO tối 26/8.
Ngoại trừ Đông Nam Á và Địa Trung Hải, dịch bệnh gần như suy yếu tại tất cả khu vực còn lại trên thế giới.
Đến nay, châu Mỹ bị Covid-19 tàn phá nhiều nhất. Tuần trước, số trường hợp nhiễm mới tại lục địa này chiếm một nửa trên thế giới. Số ca tử vong mới cũng bằng 62% toàn cầu. Tuần này, cả lượng bệnh nhân nhập viện và tử vong mới đều giảm đáng kể, chủ yếu tại Brazil và Mỹ.
Tình hình dịch tễ ở châu Âu cũng có các tiến triển tích cực. Số ca mắc mới giảm 12% so với một tuần trước.

WHO cũng cho biết đợt bùng phát tại châu Phi có thể đã qua ngưỡng nghiêm trọng nhất. Phát biểu tại Hội nghị Các bộ trưởng Y tế châu Phi, bà Matshidiso Moeti, giám đốc WHO khu vực, cho biết: “Chúng tôi dường như đã chứng kiến đỉnh dịch, giờ thì số ca nhiễm theo ngày đang giảm xuống”.
Tuy nhiên, Bộ trưởng Y tế Nam Phi Zweli Mkhize vẫn bày tỏ quan ngại về làn sóng Covid-19 thứ hai. “Lo lắng lớn nhất của chúng tôi là liệu dịch bệnh sẽ quay trở lại”, ông nói.
“Nếu nhìn vào Tây Ban Nha, ta có thể thấy lượng bệnh nhân lại tăng sau thời gian dài tạm lắng”, Zweli bổ sung.
Covid-19 tại các nước Đông Nam Á vẫn diễn biến khó lường. Số ca dương tính mới chiếm 19% toàn cầu. Philippines và Indonesia là hai vùng dịch lớn nhất khu vực.
Các chuyên gia cũng lo ngại về tình hình ở Hàn Quốc. Kể từ ngày 23/8, nước này tái áp đặt lệnh giãn cách xã hội nhằm kiềm chế Covid-19 lây lan toàn quốc khi đối đầu với một đợt bùng phát dịch mới.
Tính đến ngày 26/8, toàn cầu ghi nhận hơn 24 triệu người mắc và gần 822.000 người tử vong vì nCoV. Các chuyên gia cũng bắt đầu phát hiện một số ca tái nhiễm. Bệnh nhân tái nhiễm đầu tiên là một người đàn ông Hong Kong, mắc Covid-19 lần thứ hai sau 4 tháng khỏi bệnh. Hai bệnh nhân tái nhiễm cũng mới được ghi nhận ở châu Âu.
